RC Body Painting
Mar 11th, 2005
A long long time ago, in an attic far far away I used
to paint 1/72 scale models.
I got my first airbrush when I was 15 or
something like that. A terrible plastic Humbrol airbrush that
would mess any paint job very easily.
Then I got really proficient in using the thing.
I made excellent 1/72 scale planes that were the center of
admiration of all my fellow modelers.
When I went to study architecture I decided that
illustration and airbrush painting could be a valuable asset in
school. I bought and incredible De Vilbiss Sprite 63e for an
absurd price (at the time) and started to paint with gouache and
water colors. Some of the works were very good and they were the
key for very good grades. No one would go to the trouble of
painting their works much less with an airbrush.
I left the painting to the models for a long
period till I came to Radio Control cars. I made the first try
and for a person used to paint tiny planes, an 1/10 scale body
is huge. There's no such thing as detail.
The choice of paint was crucial and almost at
the beginning I found that acrylic water soluble paints were the
way to go. I started using Parma Faskolor and then I started to
use Createx Auto Air. It seems to be the same exact paint but at
a much better price.
For a while I offered my services to the racer
community, but they seem to think that a decent paintjob on an
RC body is for homos. Real men use shells painted with more than
questionable colors and with designs that would make a blind man
go crazy.
Anyway, there are always those that appreciate
the work and go the extra mile (money wise) to have a decent
paintjob on their shells.
If they don't want I'll keep painting my own
body shells if they want that's cool.
I leave you with some examples of what I've been
doing these past two or three years.
